Advanced Law & Trial Internship
The Advanced Law & Trial Internship Summit is a first-of-its-kind program that allows motivated high school students to intern with a law firm on cases of national importance.
In this accelerated internship, students will spend fourteen days working on one of two cases. Last year students chose between a gender discrimination case involving a high-ranking federal agent who reported misconduct by the highest levels of her agency or a whistleblowing case involving endangered animals and environmental crimes. 2021 cases will be announced in the Spring.
These cases contain highly confidential information and will require non-disclosure agreements and background checks from students and parents.
Throughout the internship, students will connect with top law professors and leading attorneys about the cases, sift through legal documents, review evidence, and help prepare the clients for trial. During the conference, students will advocate for their clients virtually to Congressmen and women, senators, and leaders on Capitol Hill - all online.
On the final day, students will conduct pre-trial cross-examination or opening statements to prepare their client for witness testimony or introduce new methods for investigating or prosecuting the case to the client and legal team.
Students will receive letters of recommendation from the lead attorney trying the cases and may have their ideas implemented.

Students will intern for a law firm, and learn from one of the nation’s top attorneys, David P. Weber, who is the former Chief Investigator of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and now a lawyer in private practice.
Interns will meet with clients online, review case documents, and help prepare their client’s case. Students will experience the legal profession while working on actual court cases.
Advocacy to Capitol Hill leaders is one of the most powerful and advantageous ways to advance and impact legislative policy priorities facing our clients and nation. Interns will work to convince lawmakers to publicly support our clients through online meetings.
In 2020, students met with a combined 38 congressional offices, directly meeting with 12 members of the House & Senate.
Interns will virtually work with legal experts to understand current case law facing their clients. While interning, students will be exposed to civil procedure, legal ethics & case research from Georgetown Law Professors & top lawyers in Washington D.C.
Students will walk away from the program with direct experience working with leading legal minds.
Leadership Initiatives has partnered with top universities around the country to form our online Law School Admissions Panel to provide students with a firsthand account of what universities look for in their accepted students.

Students will work directly with leading forensic accountants to understand how foreign banks assisted ISIS terrorists, along with data collection and surveillance experts to ensure each aspect of the crime is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Students will create a jury selection portfolio working with a jury consultant for their case. Students will create a survey of the community where the trial is taking place to understand the background characteristics of the jury pool such as race, sex, marital status, age, income, and careers.
Students will create specific questions based on their case. Questions will be designed to discover the beliefs and attitudes likely associated with a favorable or unfavorable verdict for their client. Students will then create a jury selection profile that will be used when the case goes to trial.

United States v. Manafort
One of the highest-ranking officers in her agency's history is facing discrimination based on her gender. This has hindered her ability to see her child, husband, and make advancements in her chosen career.
Due to our direct involvement in preparing Ms. Doe for the witness stand, Ms. Doe was able to credibly testify to several forms of fraud that Mr. Manafort had committed.
The Panama and Paradise Papers consist of more than 11.5 million documents leaked from two of the largest international law firm trafficking offshore shell companies throughout the world. These were the largest data breaches in history.

United States v. Manafort

Back To Overview

Virginia Trial
District of Columbia Trial
Manafort's trial in the Eastern District of Virginia began on July 31, 2018, with District Judge T. S. Ellis III presiding. Manafort was charged with various financial crimes including tax evasion, bank fraud, and money laundering.
Manafort was scheduled to be tried on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, failing to register as a foreign agent, money laundering, witness tampering and making false statements.
In Virginia, the jury found Manafort guilty on 8 of the 18 counts, including five counts of filing false tax returns, two counts of bank fraud, and one count of failing to disclose a foreign bank account.
In the District of Columbia Manafort plead guilty to two charges: conspiracy to defraud the United States and witness tampering. He also admitted to all other charges against him, both in DC and those for which there was a hung jury at his first trial in Virginia.
Ms. Doe's involvement and participation, as a key witness for the Special Counsel's office, directly contributed to Paul Manafort pleading guilty.

Gender Disparity Within The National Park Service
The Case
Gender disparity, discrimination, and sexual harassment have been found to be widespread in the National Park Service (NPS). Thirty-nine percent of NPS employees say they have experienced harassment or discrimination on the job.
Although the women of NPS have made it clear they can perform to the same standards as their male counterparts, gender discrimination still holds many back. The NPS is failing to provide a fair and inclusive environment for all employees across the country.
This case has the potential to establish legal precedent in favor of women who face gender discrimination in the workplace, particularly those in federal law enforcement, as the federal government is supposed to be a “model employer.”
Many of the congressional offices that we met with agreed to write letters of inquiry to the Department of Interior to find out more about our client’s case.
If our case is successful, this case will be used to ensure equal payment, equal evaluations and equal promotions for millions of women who work within the United States government. Changing forever how women may advance in our society.

International Finance Crimes
The Case
We investigated individuals named in the Panama or Paradise Papers in order to bring them to justice. The Panama and Paradise Papers consist of more than 11.5 million documents leaked from two of the largest international law firm trafficking offshore shell companies throughout the world. These were the largest data breaches in history.
The files revealed world leaders, celebrities, politicians, and ultra-affluent individuals from around the world that were involved in offshore tax evasion and money laundering. While some use of shell companies may be legitimate, the vast majority of those found in the databases were engaged in some form of illegality.
More than $1.2 billion in back-taxes and penalties has been publicly collected by governments around the world after the 2016 investigation.
Hidden in 11.5 million secret files were over 140 politicians from more than 50 countries connected to offshore companies in 21 tax havens.
The first people charged with crimes in the U.S. arising from the Panama Papers will face trial in January 2020, according to new court filings.
Working with a top tier law firm, we were able to create reports that will hopefully be used by government agencies and press organizations to identify and expose criminal activities we identified in our studies.
